Race Report

The second running of the Brisbane Trail Marathon was on the 28th May, 2017 with a total field of 154 runners starting at Gold Creek Reservoir in beautiful conditions. After a slight delay for some sunlight the Marathon runners took off for their single trail lap around the reservoir before coming back through the start / finish area to follow the Half (plus) Marathoners up Gold Creek Road and into spectacular terrain of the South D’Aguilar National Park.

The TRAQ crew and a handful of volunteers began the day early to establish the race precinct, it wasn’t long before the first competitors began arriving for registration and pre-race warm up. Check points where being setup by the crews from The Mountain Goat Trail Runners, Brisbane Trail Runners and out at the top end at check point 3 we had “The Green Team – Deloitte” a team participating in Oxfam Trailwalker 2017. We are very grateful for these groups supporting us, there was only positive comments for the check point crews from the runners.

Congratulations to all the place finishers in each event, with new race records for both male and female in both marathon and half marathon races:

Marathon 1st male, Yun Phua in a time of 3:58:18, setting a new race record and Shona Stephenson, 1st female also setting a new race record time of 4:29:04.

1st male

1st Lady

Half Marathon 1st male, Nigel Peacock with a time of 2:07:24, race record and Eimear O’Brien 1st female, 2:28:29, race record.

1st half

To all that ran, congratulations for running and finishing, this is not an easy trail run, with a technical single trail and a substantial elevation gain on both courses, the feedback is that it’s a great run, challenging, and well worth the effort. Thanks to “The Trail Co” for providing vouchers for the placegetters and offering a discount to competitors.

This event could not have run so smoothly if not for the volunteers. There were a number of single volunteers, mostly from the trail running community that gave their time to assist with any request from the TRAQ crew from carpark marshalling, registration, BBQ preparation, timing, and marshals at course junctions as well as looking after check point 5, our MC / race caller and the sweeps. Your enthusiasm, smiles and moral support as the runners passed by, contributed to making this event a success.

The post-race catering was supported by another Oxfam team “ RA for Life – Deloitte” the girls did a amazing job cooking up “egg n bacon” rolls and burgers for the competitors, volunteers and the WICEN crews around the course.

The TRAQ team was assisted by the crew from WICEN, who provided radio communications from the check points to race control, this ensured we knew the progress of each runner as they made their way around the course. Radio communications is vital in managing the safety of competitors as mobile phone coverage is not reliable given the terrain.

Race photos can be viewed at GeoSnapShot please have a look as the photographers gave their time and are only paid on the photos purchased.

I’m confident everyone had a great time at this event from all the positive comments on social media. The TRAQ team are pleased we can provide these events for the “trail runner” in everyone.

The Brisbane Trail Marathon will be back for a third year in 2018, so lock it in now, Sunday 27th May.

Happy Trails
