Well done all Pinnacle Classic 2017 competitors on your results. This is the race where the hills become mountains as you progress along the course. Great effort all around!

We could not have hoped for better weather after the postponement of the race from the 2nd of April. Some fast times were recorded this year. Particularly by Kim Knox who set the female race record. It’s a record that stood for 10 years, so it was about time for it to tumble! Kim ran a speedy 1:30:12, which was exactly two minutes faster than her winning time last year. Kim has established herself as a great trail runner, someone to look out for! Her two girls were equally impressed and rightly so! The second and third women ran good times as well: Eimar O’Brien ran 1:36:30 and Yvonne Baylis ran 1:45:57.

The men’s winner: Brad Ward, ran a great time of 1:23:26 in shoes that he purchased that morning at The Trail Co stand! Brad himself is relatively new on the scene too and someone to look out for in future results. The second and third positions did sub 1:30s as well: Nigel Peacock ran 1:26:29 and Kieren O’Brien was not far behind in 1:27:14.

The course was a little different this year, starting closer to the dam wall. I hope you liked the new starting area where there is more space for everyone and where you can see the runners coming in over the dam wall on their way to the finish line.

The total distance is about the same as in previous years, so times are comparable. Courses and times are a little different each year because of the footing slightly changing, and the weather having an impact as well.

The trails were dry this year and therefore a little slippery, but fortunately we only had one graze.

SEQ Water did a great job in recent days by clearing a fallen tree across the track that we reported on Tuesday.

I hope you enjoyed the burgers and catering afterwards.The Gap State High School students did an awesome job and raised plenty of funds and extra donations for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. So, thank you Sohpie, Drew, Ben, April, Jasmin and Lani, supported by Nicola, Deborah and Kate.  And thank you Rode Meats at Chermside West and Coles at The Gap for providing donations in supplies to support their mission.

TRAQ Brisbane Trail Marathon – Event Information

TRAQ presents the Brisbane Trail Marathon, incorporating a full 42.2km Marathon and a 24.7km Half Marathon to be run in the iconic, spectacular terrain of the South D’Aguilar National Park

This iconic trail running event will start and finish at Gold Creek Reservoir, Brookfield. An entry point to Brisbane’s momentous trail network.

Both the Marathon and Half Marathons course will traverse open fire-trails, narrow and single trials passing through a diversity of environments, eucalypt woodlands and lush subtropical rainforest. A full range of trail surfaces will provide all levels of trail runners and even road runners a challenge and the experience that is trail running.

Registration and Cost:

Participants must be over 18 years of age on the day.

Entry fees:
Marathon 42.2 km TRAQ member – $75
Marathon 42.2 km non-member – $90
Half Marathon 24.8 km event TRAQ member – $50
Half Marathon 24.8 km event non-member – $65

Refunds are available up to two weeks before the event (-$20 admin cost).

There is a total field limit of 200 participants for the event.

TRAQ Membership: TRAQ has an affiliation with Queensland Athletics (QA). 2017 Annual Membership fees are $17.50 per individual. The registration year runs from1 October 2016 to 30 September 2017. Enter here

Race Day

Event Times:  Race Briefing 05:45

Start Times:   Marathon 06:00,         Half Marathon 06:15.

Be there at least 30mins before your start to pick up your race bib.

Course Details:

Marathon:      The Trail Marathon heads west away from the reservoir for a short distance before turning back to track around the circumference of the reservoir, an interesting, varied and challenging single trail through thick bush, coming out at the historic cascading spillway, run pass your supports adjacent to the dam wall and then its full steam ahead up Gold Creek Road to South Boundary Road. Onto Centre Rd as you ascend to Mt Nebo to enjoy the narrow gruelling section of “Hell Hole Break”.

Once back on South Boundary Rd the vertical elevation of the D’Aguilar National Park begins, just over halfway you pass over the highest point of your run. Turning back south on Augies Rd. Enjoying the ascents and descents of trails, continue to Creek Rd., Gold Creek Boundary Track you will complete the course with a run across the top of the dam wall before running through the finish line.

Overall the Trail Marathon has a total elevation gain of approx 2300 mts.

A 7 hour cut off has been declared for the Trail Marathon event.

Half Marathon:         The Half Marathon heads away from Gold Creek Reservoir straight up Gold Creek Road to South Boundary Road. Onto Centre Rd as you ascend to Mt Nebo to enjoy the narrow gruelling section of “Hell Hole Break”.

You will also encounter the ascents and descents along the South Western sections of D’Aguilar National Park as you come back to via South Boundary Rd and the Gold Creek Boundary Track.  Descending the track the last challenge presents with the course turning to take the Gold Creek Reservoir Track an interesting, varied and challenging single trail through thick bush, coming out at the historic cascading spillway. With a final dash to cross the finish line.

The Half Marathon has a total elevation gain of approx 1000 mts.

A 5 hr 30 min cut off has been declared for the Half Marathon event.

Please note elevation on Strava maps is incorrect. Elevation taken from competitors last year was: 

Marathon approximately 2300 mts and the half approximately 1000 mts.

 Checkpoints / Marshals:

Marshals will be deployed at various sections of the course to assist with direction and guidance.

Checkpoints: For the marathon checkpoint 1 – 5 are located at
• 12km Top of Centre Rd / Mt Nebo Rd,
• 21km South Boundary Rd / Gold Creek Boundary Track intersection
• 27km South Boundary Rd / Augies Rd intersection,
• 33km – Creek Rd and Gold Creek Boundary Track intersection, and
• 38 km – near the stone house on Gold Creek Boundary Track.
The half marathon will pass through checkpoints 1, 2 (4) and 5 at 5, 14 and 21km.
Checkpoints will have water, electrolyte / sports drink, lollies, some fruit, self help first aid kits, and some cola from the 21km/14km mark. Race bib numbers will be checked off at the checkpoints. There will be no drop bags or support crews permitted at checkpoints.
Water for the marathon will be provided at the 7km mark, when the course comes through the start / finish area before heading out to South Boundary Rd.
A paramedic is stationed at checkpoint 2 at the 21km mark (14km for the half marathon), which is about 150m from checkpoint 4 at the 33km mark. The 21km point will also have a port-a-loo.
Please note that checkpoint people are allowed to stop you / get you checked out by the paramedic or even retire you from the race, if they think you are not in a good condition to continue.
You may also be retired at the 27km mark if won’t make the cut off of 7 hours (the cut off time for this point still needs to be determined and will be provided in information that will be sent out to you).

Car Parking:

There is limited parking along Gold Creek Road and at Gold Creek Reservoir. TRAQ recommends you park near the showgrounds on Brookfield Rd, Brookfield and car pool to Gold Creek Reservoir. Please be alert for fellow competitors and offer a lift if you have room. We are seeking additional parking along Gold Creek Rd, if successful, location details will be provided.

Hydration and Nutrition:

Mandatory: You must carry 1.5lts for the half marathon and 2.0lts for the full marathon. In addition to water ensure you have your own sports nutrition drink or gels to ensure your nutritional need are met along the way.
Checkpoints provide water, electrolyte / sports drink, lollies, some fruit, self help first aid kits, and some cola from the 21km/14km mark..
Make sure you do not litter, you can leave rubbish at the checkpoints.

 

Post Event Catering:

The entry fee includes a BBQ, fruit, cola, water and sports drink to help you replenish and recover afterwards.
Coffee will be available for purchase at the start/finish line.

 

General Points:

 

There is no further compulsory gear for this event, however it is advised you have with you a compression bandage / wound dressing and mobile phone in case of emergency. There will be no pacers.
Make sure you are familiar with the course – see the maps.
All finishers will receive a medal.
Toilets are located at the start / finish area and at 21 /14km checkpoint, which is close to the 33km mark.

The 2017 Mt Glorious event was once more a huge success, with 145 runners taking part, many for the first time and others coming home with PB’s.  We were extremely lucky with the weather, after the crazy heat that we have been experiencing and then the threat of a possible thunderstorm on the day.

Mt Glorious is one of the most beautiful runs on the TRAQ calendar. combining a very tough climb at the start, with the magnificent views from Northbrook Mountain, some lovely downhill stretches as you head down to the creek, a long slow climb up from the creek crossing and finishing off with the thrill of a quick run through the forest on the single track with a few steps to keep you awake and some vines to dodge before you pop out into the clearing that is the finish.   All the while you are accompanied by an amazing range of bird calls.

Congratulations to all of the runners who took part in the tough 22km trail event and thank you for making it such a great day.  There were some pretty fast times for such a hot day.  Congratulations to Slavik Titov who sped home in 2:00:15, two minutes ahead of Brad Ward, in 2:02:33, and then Nigel Peacock in 2:03:38.  The women put on a good race, with Shona Stephenson coming in first in 2:17:24, followed by Emily Davies in 2:18:50 and Kelly-Anne Speight in 2:23:51.

Most runners seemed pretty happy with their run and many were excited to have a time to beat next year.

The atmosphere after the run is something that is really special about the trail running events and it was great to see so many people staying around and relaxing after the event, in such a beautiful place.

Thank you to the fantastic volunteers who made the day happen.  Greg Waite, event founder and Race Director for many years, and Hube, TRAQ President and more recent Race Director of this event, provided invaluable support in the lead up.  Thanks to Dom for driving us around to mark the course on Saturday and to the team on Sunday, of Hube, Paul, Rolo & Karen (setup, pac kup and everything in between);Pete, Mark & Joris (registration); Phil M (parking & timekeeping); Lachlan (marshalling at the start and out on the course ensuring that runners didn’t miss the turn onto the single track), Cheryl (CP2), Greg E (setup, timing & pack up), Emily, Elmarie & Amy (catering) and of course our super sweepers, Judy & Meryll.  What a team!

Thanks to the WICEN team, who had a fun time looking after the comms side of the day.  They do a great job and I know that they are looking forward to our next event.

The Pinnacles Classic is the race where the hills feel like mountains!

This classic race over the many hills at Brookfield around the Gold Creek Reservoir will have a little difference this year. Instead of starting at the gate, we’ll start behind the dam wall. There is more space there, with less risk of running into each other and interference with other users, and, as we experienced at the Brisbane Trail Marathon, it’s great to see the runners coming in over the dam wall.

This year we’ll run the course in anti clockwise direction, so we’ll take off running back towards the gate and then up the hill towards South Boundary Road. There is one checkpoint half way at the rain gauge, so it is necessary that you carry as much as you need to make it to that point. Remember that even in late April it can be still quite hot. Take some fuel for on the way as well, but there will be some fruit and goodies at the checkpoint.

Date and Time: Planned rescheduled date: Sunday 30th April, fast wave starts at 7am, slow wave starts at 6:40am.  Race briefings are 10 mins before the starts. Be there at least 30 mins before your start to pick up your bib and nominate your start time.

Car-pooling required: Options are available during the registration process.

Course: The course is 18km long over serious hills in Brisbane Forest Park (d’Aguillar National Park), at the end of Gold Creek Road Brookfield, starting from Gold Creek Reservoir.  It is a race for seriously fit runners. See the map and course profile further below.

Catering: The entry fee includes a BBQ afterwards, but there will be also fruit, water and (sports) drink to replenish what you have left out there on the trails. Thanks to The Gap State High School students who are raising funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation to organise the catering for this event! Coffees are available too, but they are for you to purchase separately.

Registration and cost: For participants 18 years and older: entries close at 10 am Saturday 29th April with 150 entrants allowed. Entry cost $35 for TRAQ members and $42.50 for non-members. Entries Closed
